Fact Sheet for Phi Phi Island

The Phi Phi Islands are in Krabi Province which is one of the most southerly province of Thailand situated in the the Phang Nga Bay which is in the Andaman Sea, Eastern Indian Ocean. It is about 42 km from Phuket and 38 km from Krabi Provinces.

The main island is Phi Phi Don which is 8 km long by 2.5 km wide and in the shape of a dumb bell. Mainly mountains, the villages and bungalows are next to the beaches.

The smaller of the islands is >Phi Phi Ley which is 3.5 km long and 1 km wide. It is uninhabited except for the Viking Cave birds nest company that stations a couple of guards to protect their caves. Entirely made of limestone cliff this is a magnificent island with 2 major beaches, Loh Samah and Maya Bay.

Outlying Islands

The Other islands are Bamboo Island a 700 meter diameter circle of tropical paradise surrounded by coral reef.

Mosquito Island is a very picturesque limestone cliffed isle close to Bamboo Island. The island gets it’s name from the black clouds of mosquitoes at sunset. The Bida Islands are off to the south of Phi Phi Ley. With no beaches these rocky atolls are famous for their diving.

Bungalow rooms

    There are about 2000 rooms on Phi Phi Island of which 850 are air conditioned. The simple accommodation does not take pre bookings from October -March preferring to alter prices on demand from the “walk in ” guests.

Population

    There are 1500 local inhabitants and about 500 people Chinese Thai and Western who work in the Tourist trades.

Electricity

    In Thailand is 220 volts and uses a 2 pin plug. Most international airport sell adapters for your electrical goods.

Business hours

    In Thailand hours of work are 08.30 till 17.00 p.m. but most family store open till 22.00. All shops on Phi Phi Island are open till 22.00 except the Dive shops that close at 21.00.

Currency

    The local currency is the Baht. Please respect it, since the King’s head is on the note. Thai people are sensitive to this.

Mail

    The small post office does post cards and inbound mail. If you have something important use the main post offices at Phuket or Krabi.

Cameras

    There is a Kodak shop 90 meters from the pier that develops standard film It sells ASA100-ASA400. It does not develop APS film though it does sell it.

Phones

    There are government phones on the island. One is at the pier.

TV

    There is Satellite TV, CNN and BBC on the island. Most sporting events are available in the bars-Reggae Bar and Tintin’s Bar.

Computers

    Most hotels do not have phone lines for their customers that can carry a digital system. Most people rely on the internet cafes to check mail and surf the web. Siam UK 70m from the pier has 4 computers, E-Travel near the Phi Phi Banyan Villas has 4 computers also.
