Excellent food shopping in Central Chidlom
A bit off track from my usual rants and rages against the machine that is Bangkok, but every now and then, between the festering weeds and rank cess-pits grows a sweet smelling rose.
This particular rose is Central Chidlom which offers a truly marvelous food centre for all your grocery needs.
It boasts itself as being the best food shopping centre in South East Asia ( might even be Asia ) and although I doubt it’s that great, it still offers an excellent selection of food stuffs to satisfy even the most delicate of tastes.Central really pushed the boat out and employed a whole bunch of westerners to revamp the food counters, meat, fish and cheese counters as well as the wine’s imported and the variety of foods available with many food items being imported from Australia, UK, Japan and many other countries.
If you have a craving for Marks and Spencers chocolate chip cookies, they are there, and so are Cheezels, which are potato chip snacks from Australia. These are just two items but there are plenty of other food items including a huge variety of cheeses, pies and cold meats.
the only thing that is not up to international standards might be the bakery. Central tries hard but it just doesn’t get it right ( for me anyway ). There is lots of pretzel type bread, hard crusted loaves and bagels but there is not the selection. No muffins, no soft buns or rolls, no toasted tea cakes and so on.
There is a lot of bakery with suaces squeezed over them and bread with suasages in the middle, or dried grated pork, but this is typical Thai affair with some western artifacts thrown in for good measure.
The rest is excellent and the prices are decent enough. However, if you are a penny pincher, buy your meat from Central and your vegetables from Siam Paragon.. the prices differ quite considerably.
